what the heck just happened?
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:14:48 AM »
While I was on the middle of playing arma 2, my computer randomly shut down, no warnings, nothing and it won't turn on. I've unplugged it, cleaned some of it out, moved it to another outlet, nothing works. From what I have in mind is its my power supply.

That totally sounds like a power supply problem.  Do you have any extra ones lying around?  Damn, you're having some computer problems lately ain't ya.

Does the PSU fan spin up at all? Dead dead? Or just no boot?

Might not be the PSU then. Do you get a series of beeps? Anything at all? Or it is it just power on, PSU spins up , then spins down. Check for lights on the mobo and if the CPU fan spins up. Try disconnecting everything you can, literally everything that is not needed to boot. Do you have a voltmeter? You can short the PSU start pins and then test each voltage... I can get you a diagram if needed. Or buy a PSU tester.

Sound's like the MoBo is shorted. Check all the USB ports and make sure nothing is stuck inside shorting the pins, and disconnect anything you don't NEED to boot and try then. After that, try unplugging the PSU and then short the start pins and see if it start's up fine. I'd bet it's your mobo though. Though the ROOT of the issue could still have been caused by the PSU.

Could be the graphics card when interfacing and drawing power from the mobo. could be the card is drawing too much power from the extra rail. Sounds more like the PSU is pooping out and can't power the GPU as well as everything else. =(

Try a different rail for the GPU power. Then see if you can try it with another PSU (borrow one?). But make sure to test it with a much more powerful PSU.

What's your PSU rated at (watts total & amps on the rails)?

As soon as I plug my gfx card back in it won't start, but it is fine without it, ill probably get both a card and a new power supply, but I dunno if I have an extra psu, I have an old ass one though, but ill try it.
