SOPA, PIPA, ACTA etc. discussion

quickly copied from wiki cuz cba'ed to find all the other places where i read about it
Quote
The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill expands the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.[2] Now before the House Judiciary Committee, it builds on the similar PRO-IP Act of 2008 and the corresponding Senate bill, the Protect IP Act.[3]

The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who requests the court orders, the actions could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators such as PayPal from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a felony. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement.[4]
Proponents of the bill say it protects the intellectual property market and corresponding industry, jobs and revenue, and is necessary to bolster enforcement of copyright laws especially against foreign websites.[5] Opponents say that it infringes on First Amendment rights, is Internet censorship,[6] will cripple the Internet,[7] and will threaten whistle-blowing and other free speech.[8]

i for one am completely against it.. even though i'm not an american i'm still affected by most if not all of those regulations

I've been watching this for a while, but I don't think it will pass. If it does it will the single greatest fallacy involving freedom of information ever.

Ain't going to pass.  But if it does, wouldn't surprise me at all because our Congress is so ultra uber disconnected and elitist now, they could give two craps about the rest of us.  I hope they all burn in some horrendous fire that consumes them all in the Capitol building.  I hate them so much.  HATE them.

KILL IT. KILL IT NOW.
I agree with Marxman up there. They would be doing more to violate rights with this than they would be preserving them.

Americans are too apatheitc to care.  This will probably pass. Facism is trendy now.  Besides that, I signed a petition directed to my local representatives stating I am against this bill whole heartedly.  Plus,  the Obama administration will most likely veto any bill that gets through.

I've already contacted my reps mult times and posted on youtube and google+... no-one responded. =(
I hope people are taking action. All I got back were automated messages from my reps, sadly they are supporting it.
We can only hope that congress understands that the PEOPLE don't want it. Only big corporations and lobbyists do.
But we are rapidly becoming a country that bends to the acme-big-corp's will.

All the supporters of the bill are turning their backs to it now.  It's not going anywhere.

More like go public opinion on the subject made them shake in their boots(including obama) because they wouldn't be re-elected to their position again if it was signed into law.

Quote from: Wikipedia:ACTA
Even though the precise terms of ACTA remain undecided, the negotiants' preliminary documents reveal many troubling aspects of the proposed agreement" such as removing "legal safeguards that protect Internet Service Providers from liability for the actions of their subscribers" in effect giving ISPs no option but to comply with privacy invasions.
Scary scary scary. What are legislators thinking? We need to start working on a free underground internet. Hack the planet!
