New Laptop
« on: November 26, 2016, 02:09:20 pm »
Just picked up an alienware. They had a great discount and coupons. All said and done the laptop will have cost only a little over...
$2000

i7-6820HK
GTX 1080
QHD 120hz Gsync screen
32G DDR4 512G SSD 1TB HDD
Also: USBC/TB3, Tobii eye tracking

http://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/productdetails/alienware-17-laptop/dkcwg05hcombo

List price was $3000
-$500 sale
-%10 cupon code
-%12 ebate cash back
Brings the cost down almost to $2000!
but then +$500 for 4 years service =P

I bought that $300 40" Samsung 4K TV to use as a monitor with it.

Now I need a bag for this damn behemoth. =O
(spent all my money but now I want a Vive sooo bad! haha)

This is the most I've ever spent on a device, desktops, servers, anything. Makes me nervous as hell. I usually always go ffor the best bang for the buck. it just happened to be the top end this time. First time I've ever owned top end anything, as opposed to "value" targeted products. I've shyed away from Dell in the past, so I hope Alienware does right by me. There are reported issues with this screen/panel, and build quality control issues. I bought the 4 year premium service just in case ($500 piffing dollars! Good grief!).

But considering I would have sspent this much to upgrade my laptop and my desktop this year. And this way I have a device that is nearly as powerful as the desktop I would build, 3x as powerful as my current s3D gaming desktop, and will hopefully last... I'm not feeling tooo much buyers remorse.

I have 30 days to retern it so I'm gonna do an intense burn-in. Anyone ever owned an alienware laptop? How's the service? Any ideas for burn-in (aside from the obvious ofc)? Can anyone recommend particularily taxing games to help with the burn-in? Anyone seen alternative laptops that llok great with either 1070 or 1080? I was considering the Razer Book Pro, but damn is it pricey, and I heard it has major driver issues and that the razer spport is scammy and bad. Anyone have a razer book?

piff. nice. sounds like you're set for the next 3-4 years with this one... im guessing it's 17.3" because i havent seen specs like that on a 15.6" laptop yet

Yeah 17.3 (damn this thing is huuuge, I can't find bags for it and it nearly exeeds the US carry-on dimentions since its over 13" deep (334mm). I'm hoping to get a solid 5-7 years outta this beast. It will actually supplant my desktop gamer as my primary work and gaming rig for the next year or so (Planning on going big once Zen prices come down. Gonna return to the all AMD setup (last one was a OCed x4 with crossfire 6750s), will hopefully go for top Zen, crossfire, liquid cooling, hectic overclock, and stick the box in the server closet for controlled cooling and run long cables to the desk for a silent env.

Till then I'll just dock the laptop to multi monitor setup. Got the 30" 4k sammy, laptop QHD 120hz, s3D FHD 144hz, 27" QHD, and looking at 4k OLED next with superb color accuracy for art and design work (I wish I could afford this: http://www.tweaktown.com/news/52937/dell-surprises-new-30-inch-4k-120hz-oled-display/index.html). Thank goodness for thundderbolt-3. Also considering these: http://www.packedpixels.com/

What I really need is to gget 10gbe between the server nodes and laptop/desktop so I can parallelize my workflow, and actually put those 96 cores and 200GB ram to good use. =P
